new claim for PIP was created by Silverfox 7
Hi, could anyone give us some advice please, i am recovering from a stroke and it has left me with slight brain damage so i am sorry if i dont make myself clear. I have been disabled since 1990 i receive full PIP and full mobility allowance and my Wife receives full carers allowance for me. My Wifes health has been getting worse for three years and she now struggles. 8 months ago she was diagnosed with Cerebrovascular disease which effects her memory and daily duties she needs prompting to take her medications and to cook food she chokes on her food, she also has Chronic Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis of the neck and spine as well as more personal problems. All have been diagnosed by consultants We where contacted from our local carers association and the Alzheimer’s Charity since speaking to them we have had a bath hoist and have just heard we are to get a wet room installed in March other items have been installed to help my Wife get out of bed and walk around, they advised us to put in a claim for PIP for my Wife to help pay towards getting some help we where concerned because i already get benefits after many long calls with them We decided and put in a claim for PIP in November last year we have not heard anything yet but i believe that’s normal. Now having sent in the application we are really concerned that if she was not successful in her claim will we loose the carers payments we currently receive if so what we can do could we appeal. Also since sending in the application there has been changes to her health and medications do i call them or send in the letters of proof.
I hope i have made myself clear
Thank you.

Hi Silverfox 7. NB I am not a mod, just a fellow member. Sorry to hear about your stroke and brain damage, however personally I think I understand what you are asking. I don't know all of the answers.
What I will say is, please have a look at the copy I hope you kept of the form you submitted in November to claim PIP for your wife. Did you use the Members only Guide on here to help you fill it in? The vital thing is always not what conditions your poor wife has, but how they affect her doing all the things in the questions ["Descriptors"].
Do study the section in the Guide about assessments and think if your wife will be able to answer the questions on the phone, and how you will deal with this, so you are both ready as you may get only a few days notice.
Once the assessment is done for your wife, give it 48 hours and call to ask for a copy of the assessor's report. Unless you live in N Ireland you are allowed to have this copy whatever they say. So if refused first time just thank them nicely, get off the phone, and try again in a while until you get one who agrees to send it. If you can manage to back it up with a letter, do. If not, call again if it has not come in the post in a week or so.
When you get the assessors report, study it carefully comparing to the form, and the assessment. If anything is wrong mark it to help you find it again. This will help you get a request for a Mandatory Reconsideration sent in within the short deadline if the decision is not good when it comes. Do stay in touch with the forum for more answers and especially if you don't like the look of the assessment report. The Mandatory Reconsideration is a first step towards appealing.
I hope I have not confused you, and I will stop at that point for now.
best wishes,
Denby

Hi Silverfox 7
Only you can answer the question about changes to your wife's health and medications.
Carers Allowance will not stop if your wife claims PIP providing she does 35 hours a week caring for you and earns less that £128 per week if she works: www.gov.uk/carers-allowance.
One of the problems she may have at an assessment is explaining how she does 35 hours a week caring for you due to her disabilities, potentially she could be hit with an overpayment, so you have to bear that in mind when she is being assessed.
Not all deterioration or even new conditions will result in your wife scoring the points need for a higher award. See our PIP Claims guide for the criteria that your wife will need to make.
Have a look at our PIP Claim guide for a better understanding of the criteria you will need to meet.
