Claiming UC

I'm currently waiting for the decision for my PIP renewal. I have issues including: anxiety (GAD, obsessional thoughts, panic attacks etc) depression and physical mobility issues stemming from SPD/PGP including chronic pain and I need elbow crutches and a wheelchair.

My current award is enhanced for both daily living and mobility. I was previously on Middle rate Care and lower rate mobility for DLA and changed to PIP in 2018 due to my area migrating to PIP, so this is my first PIP renewal.

My first ever medical assessment for PIP I had a home visit, which I think benefited me, he could see my aids and could see how bad I was.

I feel that the telephone medical assessment for my renewal (13th Jan 21) did not go well, it was obvious that the assessor did not have my / read my form.
I know that I forgot/ missed out some things and said a few things wrong e.g. When I'd last gone out on my own (to the G.P, in a taxi, Partner on mobile) I said about a year ago, my partner supporting me tried to correct me to say more like 3 years , but I was so anxious that I said it wrong (I had just read through my last application - which is where I got the 1 year from).

I have also realised that I did not mention neuropathic pain on the form or in the assessment, but I have the meds for it, it's on my last application and in the letters from medical professionals on this and my previous application.
Luckily I'd gone through some of my old paperwork and wrote some notes down, but I'm not sure how accurately I replied as I was being asked questions about my medical history 14, to 12 years ago. This was my first PIP renewal and 1st telephone assessment, , I wasn't expecting them to ask about things from 14 years ago so got very flustered.
I have requested a copy of the report.

I'm now worrying about the future, I am particularly worried about having to apply for UC &/or ESA.
At the moment (and since I've been on DLA) my partner gets Carers Allowance, so he gets Income Support and claims for me as a couple, I've (thankfully) never had to apply for ESA.
We get Income support , so we get:
The basic amount for being a couple £116.80
The disability premium (I think) £49.80
Carers amount? £37.50
Disabliity income guarantee (Enhanced disability premium?) £24.50
So £228.60 then take off the carers of £67.25 = £161.35 per week.

If they decide to award me Standard daily living instead of enhanced will I lose income support and have to apply to Universal Credit and ESA? Or as he can still get carers we can stay on Income support?
If I get put down to standard daily living PIP do I still get the Disability and carers premiums in Income support?

In some ways my partner claiming Income support for me (because of carers) has been a godsend - not having to go through the trauma of ESA. But it also means all our money is linked to my PIP. If I lose PIP, then we lose Carers →income support →Housing benefit, council tax support and I don't know what effect it will have on our Child Tax credit (I have 3 high school aged children). I don't know if we manage to stay on Income support, CTC could call it a change of circumstances and make us apply for UC.

I'm terrified of Universal Credit. Sorry for the long post. I know no one knows what will definitely happen, but I'm trying to prepare myself for the different possible outcomes.

Hello nic,

I am really sorry you feel the way you do. I can hear the stress between every word of your post.

If you wish to, you can have a look at the benefits calculators on this page.

www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators

You can run all sorts of scenarios through them if you wish.

However, here is hoping that things turn out better than you fear. And remember if you don’t think your PIP assessment is correct, you do have a right to challenge it. Come back to us if you need advice on next steps.

Nic, hello. I'm not a mod but this I know. If you are waiting for your decision having had the assessment, please DO call DWP and ask for a copy of the assessment report. [Unless you live in NI] it is your right to have this. So if the agent tries to refuse don't argue, just call back shortly after, until one agrees to send it. This puts some control back in your hands. When you get it, grab a highlighter pen before you start to read. You're pretty certain to want to mark this that and the other that isn't right. This will form the basis of challenging the decision if necessary.
The sooner you ask DWP for the report the better. I even managed to write in taking our daughter's report apart before the decision maker got to it, and got her enhanced on both reinstated without MR or appeal - it shows it is possible. Hope you get a nice agent first time, but as I say don't be put off, just try again if necessary. With best wishes, Denby
