PIP and Carers was created by redgt9
I'm sorry to trouble you but if possible could you answer this question for me. I'm retired so on State Pension and also on enhanced payments of PIP in both categories. I'm thinking of getting some help with a carer, if I pay privately out of my PIP , I wont have to say I'm claiming Carers Allowance because I wont be, I wont be asking them to pay so it should not make any changes to my benefits is that right. Thank you.

Hi redgt9
State Pension and the Carers Allowance are classed as overlapping benefits and only the one that pays the most usually the Pension is payable, a Carer Element of around £37/week will be added to the Pension Credit, if you are eligible to claim PC. This payment would be paid if you had an 'underlying entitlement' to CA.
To claim Carers Allowance, a claimant has to:
a) ~ spend at least 35 hours a week caring for a disabled person (you don't have to live with them or be related to them)
b) ~ care for someone who receives the higher-rate or middle-rate care component of Disability Living Allowance, either rate of Personal Independence Payment daily living component, or any rate of Attendance Allowance
c) ~ do not earn more than £128 a week (after deductions)
d) ~ are not in full-time education
You don't have to be related to or live with the person you care for to claim Carer's Allowance. It's extra money each week for you to use as you want or need to.
You will not be penalised if you get help from a carer, it's your money and you can spend it on what you want, have you ever thought about claiming Pension Credit? depending on your circumstances you may be entitled to claim PC www.gov.uk/pension-credit if you have any private pensions make sure you declare them.
If you have any further questions please come back to the forum.
