Help with attending a funeral Income related ESA

Sadly one of my parents has died. They lived hundreds of miles away from me. I have had to pay £200 for train fare and Bed And Breakfast accommodation in order to attend the funeral later this month. I have very little money left to survive on, it worries me a very great deal. I didn’t have much before all this happened and a number of unexpected expenses arose all at the same time as well as having to support my student son on just the single and singular person’s benefit that I receive.

Does anyone know if I can apply for some help with this which I will not have to pay back? It is all a bit scary as well because I am in the clinically extremely vulnerable group, and I have got three legs to the six hour train journey. I hope they are keeping the trains clean!. But at least I got a discount with my Disabled person’s railcard.

Please advise if you are able to give me any instructions on how to move forward with this.

Hello Porridge,

I am sorry to hear about your loss. Unfortunately I am not aware of any easy answer of where you might get financial help which you will not have to repay.

If you have been in the services, their charities are generally very supportive. Is it possible that the person managing your parent’s estate might be able to help? If neither of those are possible I would suggest you approach a local advice body who may know of local bodies who are in a position to assist.

This can be a helpful link in locating someone.

Sorry not to have been able to be of more help,
Catherine
