What can I claim please was created by Fleur33
Hi,
I am trying to leave g an abusive partner and have found a private rental but have been unable to get through to CAB and do not know if I will be entitled to help with the rent and council tax. It is a 2 bedroom.
I am in receipt of PIP and ESA support group.
Is there anything to help me get the basics that I need to move? Like a loan?
Thank you

Hi Bobbi 33

The first question to ask is will you be moving on your own or do you have child? if you move on your own then moving into a 2 bed property you would be affected by under occupancy charge or the bedroom tax as it is known as.

We cannot give you a definitive answer as we do not know your circumstances such as will you be moving in the same local authority area, do you work etc.....

You can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies.

I am not a Mod but they often recommend the Shelter helpline on 0344 515 1515 for advice.
I would also try to get as much stuff to set yourself up as possible for free. Look for both 'freecycle' and 'freegle' sites in the area as well as sometimes people give things free, or sell extremely cheap, on gumtree and local facebook groups. Also check for house clearance and charity shop bargains. It's often worth taking a trip if possible to any nearby wealthy areas for all these places, as you can get more where there are less people desperate and more who can afford to replace stuff that's still usable.
Very best wishes in your new life, Denby

Hi again Bobbi 33, forgot to say I believe all councils have a responsibility to help people leaving abusive relationships. Although you have found your own rental they still could be very helpful on benefits. In one borough I know a little about, they give free vouchers for second-hand white goods [fridge and washer].
Hope this helps, especially if there isn't a decent advice service near you.
