PIP Renewal - Moving Around - No "it varies box"? was created by Ringout
Hello,
I am in the process of filling out my PIP renewal form, but I have run into an issue I hope you may be able to advise me on.
On Page 18, it asks about the "Moving Around" activity. Unlike my original PIP application form, there isn't a box to state that "It varies". As my primary condition is ME, the distance I can walk varies considerably to the point that I am unsure which box to tick as "It varies" would be the only suitable option! I was considering not ticking a box and writing "It varies", but I wanted to ask for any guidance or suggestions you may to be able to offer.
Thank you very much.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hello Ringout,
Your suggestion is certainly a good way round the problem you face! The other way, and I am not sure that it is any better, is to think how far can you 'reliably' walk. That is how far can you rely on being able to walk on 4 days out of 7 and taking no longer than double the length of time someone without walking difficulties would take.

Morning. Resting time needs to be taken into account, and repeatedly. You maybe be able to walk a few miles but then spend a week in bed. Or round town for an hour, but then you can’t actually move or have to go to bed when you get home etc.
Keep a little diary of the next couple of weeks, or think back to the last couple of weeks if you have a working memory!!
I use a week as a guide to percentages, ie. 5/7 I cannot leave the house, type thing.
Focus on what you CANNOT do; which is probably contradictory to how you normally would assess yourself..

Hi Catherine,
Thank you for your reply - apologies for the delay in my response. I decided to go with the approach of picking the most relevant box, explaining that none of them were really satisfactory and that I really needed the "it varies" box and fully (I hope) explaining the variability of my condition and how it affects my ability to walk. I've also explained that my situation hasn't really changed since last time.
Thanks again for your help - it's much appreciated.

Hello Angel,
Thank your for your reply. Yes, I carefully considered what I can and can't do and explained the variability as best I can. I've been using the Benefits and Work Guides for a number of years now and they have been so helpful and it really helps ease to stress knowing that I'm giving my best possible answers, taking into account all of the advice given. I'd recommend them to anyone faced with these horrible forms!
This was the first time I'd ever had a question the guides didn't answer and therefore the first time I've had reason to use the forum. Thanks so much for your reply.
Regards,
Ringout
