Hi,
My son who is 26 and has autism is having a telephone Pip assessment next week. I'm his appointee and my son will be beside me but may or may not contribute verbally to the assessment. Not sure till the day. Is it ok if he contributes? Also is my husband allowed to contribute via me or will the assessor stop him? My husband has Parkinson's and had a phone assessment last week where I was able to contribute but I'm not his appointee.

The reason that your son has you as his appointee is that a DWP officer decided that he does not have the mental capacity to administer his Benefits claim. So this being the case it is acceptable for him to not participate in the interview at all and for the Appointee to respond. Having said that the PIP Assessor will initially attempt to start a conversation with him.
It is at the assessors discretion if your husband is allowed to contribute.

Thanks for your reply David and for clarifying the role of appointee. Its the first telephone assessment for his pip so wasn't sure how it worked in this situation. All the decisions to date have been paper based and this has thrown me a lot! Will let you know how it goes.

I, too, would be very interested to hear what happens, whatever you decide to do. My son (aged 30) also has autism and I am his appointee. Each time he has had an assessment (twice now), the assessor has insisted he should be present, but neither gave us the outcome we were hoping for, so next time, I shall do my best to discourage him from participating.
