RECIEVING BENEFITS 2WKs after making UC Claim

Hi all,

It is my understanding that I am intitled to still receive Housing Benefit for up to 2 weeks after applying for UC?

I received my last full HB payment on the 30 April, and I applied for UC on 02 May, So I expected 2 weeks HB to be paid into my account by the Local Authority. But I received Nothing.

On the other hand I did receive my DWP ESA full payment on the 02 May, paid early due to the Monday being a Bank Holiday, and on the 15 May got a lesser payment from DWP ESA which I assumed was the 2 week run on amount.

Should I have received a similar lesser amount from the Local authority Housing Benefit for up to 2 weeks after applying for UC?

As today they sent me a letter inferring I was trying to commit fraud, by sending them my new tenancy agreement dated 30th April 2025, When I had not even applied for UC. I sent the new tenancy agreement so that their records would be up to date, with the correct amount it had changed to. So any run-on amount would be paid at the correct rate.

They now seem to be implying that just because I sent my new TA, on the 30th April, and claimed UC on the 02 May, that I was trying to claim HB for the whole 3 years of my new tenancy agreement, which of course is not true. As I knew my UC would alert them to it now being paid by UC instead. So do the Local Authority owe me 2 weeks rent at the new rate as a run on?

Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated

Navigator.

Hi Navigator

I think the best thing to do is to phone the Council's Housing Benefit section and ask them when they are making an implication about fraud. You could also ask when you will receive your HB run on. Maybe its delayed because of their investigations.

Hi, I think you made things more complicated for yourself with the tenancy agreeement, should have just uploaded it to uc claim only. You will not get housing benefit run on immediately. What will happen is the council will be notified of your uc and inform you that housing benefit will end or ended on said date and we owe you x amount for said period which will be paid into your account by said date. I claimed uc in march and only last week received the letter saying they owe me and will be paid by end of may. Also bear in mind as the government is rushing the migration, the council is overrun, just like the uc work coaches in dwp.

Lots of false information and errors occuring for haste. All these errors will be mopped up by uc reveiws in the future by the task teams. Priority is to get everyone migrated and respond to those relatively quicker who are closer to moving to work. work coaches are under pressure and cant be expected to know everything. The dwp benefits law policy is complicated and open to misinterpretation by some who think they genuienly 'know' but don't. Back to your housing benefit, like David has said you need to contact the council to clear up your issues and nip it in the bud for your peace of mind.

Hi Roadrunner,

Thank you for your comprehensive reply. I was told by the council to send them the updated tenancy agreement, as I hadn't applied for UC at that point. The whole point of the run on, is that you get it in order to help you through the period where you have no money coming in, and not after as in your case. As for how busy the DWP or councils are, that is not my problem, it is their job to ensure people get paid any money owed on time, and not when they feel like getting around to it.
Having now sorted out the Council their excuse, was as usual to blame the "System" and they said "The system didnt know where to allocate the funds to." This despite paying my rent for years? And will now be paid in 3 days time.

I just want to make people aware, that do not sit back and wait for the council or the DWP to pay the run-on, give it 2 weeks after applying for UC, and get on to them to find out where it is, or they may keep you waiting and financially struggling, because they are busy, but them being busy wont put food on your table. As you yourself found out roadrunner.

Hi David, thanks for your message, all sorted now.

Just want to make people aware chase your council for the run-on, as many are holding on to the money for far too long, before paying it.

Hi Navigator

If you think the DWP is bad I have some choice examples of the outsourced Housing/Council Benefit companies such as Capita.
