Hi, just had our Council Tax bill in and we must pay nearly £1,200.00

Phoned the council up and they said that everyone on UC must now pay, is this correct? after going from nothing to pay to now nearly £1,200.00, this doesn’t seem correct?
The actual figure is £1, 650.00+ so looks like they have given us a 25% reduction
At the bottom of the standard yellow council tax letter, it says Reason for Bill: CT Reduction Overpayment [not sure what they mean by this]

We recently managed migrated with transitional protection from Income related ESA to Universal credit and nothing has changed apart from the council tax going up,

My husband is in the Support group and I care for him full time, he also receives PIP Enhanced daily living and mobility, I receive PIP and my adult son who lives with us receives PIP

Please advise and confirm if as of now anyone going from IR-ESA to UC must now pay around 75% council tax even if illnesses and circumstances as regards individuals health is the same, I really did not see this coming and don’t understand it,

Please advise on what or who to contact next, but as I say all that was said on phone was as of now everyone on UC must pay?
Thank you for any help

Hi CLINTIAN

Which Council issues your bill? Is it administered by a private company such as Capita or Liberata?

Hi David, it is Stockton on Tees, after a google of this and Capita it does have a link to e-paycapita.com

at the bottom of the letter it gives payment instructions to pay at the Post Office,
The council tax bill period is for aptil 2025 - march 2026
it is exactly the same tellow council tax letter as before for period 2024 2025 Which was zero to pay but now nearly £1,200.00

we dont know what to think, is this a mistaske or are people on UC having to pay and in our case only around a 25% reduction off the full bill?

Thank you David for your help

Hi CLINTIAN

They have forgotten to apply the Council Tax Reduction Scheme.
Even though you may have said on your UC Migration form that the DWP can share UC information with the Council they don't legally have to give you Council Tax Reduction unless you contact them directly and inform them of your Migration to UC.
