Hi everyone
I am hoping someone can give some clarity on the following, and this is the first time I have actually experienced this kind of query. I have a very good friend with whom I meet at a support group twice weekly and he has 2 grown up Daughters. My friend is on enhanced PIP and he has multiple health issues. He is 67 years old and has an ongoing award. Both of his Daughters when younger, were subjected to terrible ordeals that has impacted severely on their mental health with suicidal tendencies and attempts. One Daughter has challenging personality disorders and depression and the other Daughter has severe depression and has also been in trouble with the Police multiple times. One of these unfortunate girls has also developed a drug habit that is extremely challenging for the family. Both girls have their own addresses separate from my friend and they are both claiming PIP at enhanced rates, although one of the girls has just very recently had her rates lifted to enhanced from standard. They both still have the same surname as my friend and he is now worried sick that the DWP will think there is some sort of scam going on because 3 members of the same family are all on PIP. He believes matters are made worse because his older sister with the same surname is also on PIP as she has COPD and other health issues. I have tried to assure him that the DWP looks at each case on the evidence provided and nothing whatsoever to do with how many people from the same family claim an award, but he is really anxious about it all. I do know when I worked in Welfare Rights many years ago, it wasn't unusual for both Parents over a certain age to each claim Attendance Allowance and I have also seen numerous members of families claim DLA. I think it is this purge on claimants that has him thinking this way, but nevertheless, I have actually began wondering if he may have a point and if it is practice for any red flags to be raised just because a number of claimants from the same family are awarded. What do you think?

Hi Hughie

I think your friend is worrying about nothing. I don't think it would matter even if they all lived in the same house - but they don't so why would they even think they are related? There are plenty of people who have the same surname and are related to each other and plenty who share a name and are nothing to do with each other. Yes, the DWP might be suspicious fi there were ten adults in the same house with identical names all receiving PIP - but the fact that this man has two daughters living their own lives who have problems won't be an issue for them. I have relatives where two or three adults in the same household have all claimed PIP - nothing has ever been said.
