Council Housing costs evidence for UC was created by belarion
Hi Forum,
Hope you can help, as I've received conflicting info on this.
I have question regarding housing costs evidence when applying for UC, migrating from ESA.
I'm asking specifically about the case where you live in Council property (Council tenancy).
By this I mean after entering housing costs info (Rent/Service charges) on the migration online form, and any requests for documents to be uploaded at the end of the form OR subsequently when asked to provide documents at first meeting at JS, or requests for the same via journal.
Citizens advice give the following info:
"If you rent from your local council or housing association, you don’t need to take evidence of your housing costs to your interview. You’ll have entered details of your housing costs in your online application - the DWP will get in touch with your landlord to check those details are correct."
Is this correct?
Would I simply need to just enter the housing costs as figures in the online app form OR
would I have to submit either during the UC online application, at the UC interview, or later via UC journal, any other evidence, such as: Tenancy agreement, rent statements, Letter from council detailing rent/service charges.
It would really help to get a definitive answer on this.
Thanks greatly.

Hi belarion
Citizen Advice are correct, when you apply on line you will be asked for your rent, if you pay service charges UC will want to know the amount of eligible service charges as they will not pay ineligible service charges such as communal central heating.
Once you have completed your application UC will contact your social landlord to verify the amount of rent any eligible service charges number of bedrooms and occupants. If the information from your social landlord does not match with what you have stated then it will cause your claim to be suspended whilst the error is sorted out.
Quite often tenants do not tell their landlord of changes in their circumstances which can cause problems.
