Moving home when on UC, rent changes increased rent was created by ScotD23
Hi
My son is on UC/PIP considering looking at moving from a council tenancy to a private rent which of course would be much more expensive. He migrated to UC in January 25, gets transition protection, which eroded by £30 in the first 3 months of the award when his council rent increased in April.
We were advised if he looked at moving to a private let he would qualify for the maximum private rent allowance, about £750 for a one bed in Edinburgh, vs current about £420 per month for his council place, housing element paid from UC.
GIven UC appears set with an eroding transition protection, which has already eroded with his first rent increase, if he moved to a private place and the award approved, would he actually get this increased rent award in his UC - an increased overall UC award ?- or would it basically all net off the current protection and he would pay the excess each month from the UC he lives on?
Many thanks

Hi ScotD23
Your son's TP would erode so that over time it will go down to zero.
We would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Specialist; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with accurate advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies in your area advicelocal.uk
