Our son is about to receive a compensation payment through disability discrimination after being assaulted last year. They asked if he wanted it put into a trust but the amount is £6500. We are aware it could go into a trust but the costs are quite high, also fewer banks are doing these trustee accounts. We have been told it will be disregarded for 12 months initially for his UC, housing benefit and council tax. However what is he allowed to use it on without it being deprivation of capital. He does need some items for his home and an item to help with his disability. So basically will it be disregarded for 12 months and is he allowed to spend it.

Hi lollo1

He can use his money on what ever he wants, it is his money, he will need to be careful as he could be affected by notional capital.

We would advise your son to keep receipts of any large item spends such as new computer.
