UC Transitional Protection New job under 16 hours was created by Kittykatz
I have transitional protection from working tax credits and work just under 17 hours. I am looking for a new job. Can I work under 17 hours if I earn over a certain amount under UC rules? Does my transitional protection stay the same with a job which may pay slightly less?
Thank you

Hi Kittykatz
There is not a 16 hour rule in UC as there is with Income Support and the old ESA.
The more you earn the less UC you get but you still are eligible for the Transitional Protection.
if your Universal Credit award ends due to an increase in income and you make a new claim for Universal Credit within 3 months of your previous claim ending – in this case the new claim is considered a continuation of the old claim and the transitional protection can be included again.
Have you tried using a Benefits calculator such as Entitledto.co.uk ?

Hi David,
Thanks your reply.
Recently I got a pay rise of £68 a month and my UC Transitional Protection was reduced slightly however I am still £30 better off a month before I got the pay rise. Is this because the deductions are 55p into a pound?
I get quite a good hourly rate of pay but most jobs don't pay as well, I'm weighing up my options. If I work 2 or 3 more hours a week and if there are any reductions, will this be worked out 55p into the pound?
I tried entitled to but it didn't help with my query.

Hi Kittykatz
Do you get a Work Allowance on your UC? The taper rate for everyone is 55p in the £.
For every £1 you or your partner earns your payment goes down by 55p
