Making a UC claim as No Fixed Abode was created by HelenCP
Hi There
I'm completely new to this site and forum and haven't claimed any benefits for many years but find myself in need of some support right now. My living situation is a little unconventional and if there is anyone here who can offer some advice I'd be really grateful.
I'm looking at making a UC claim but I live on a boat and am effectively 'of no fixed abode'. I am struggling to find work, partly I think because of my age, partly because of the sectors I am looking at are oversubscribed. I am able to work, no physical disability or mental illness, aside from feeling pretty despondent. I am looking for a role that I can do from home, predominantly, as I have a very traumatised and nervous dog and I'm unable to leave her alone for any length of time.
I don't know or understand the benefits system and would really like some help to navigate it. Many thanks Helen

Hi HelenCP
Welcome to the forum. Helen, I don't know whether you realise, but we generally help people who are sick and disabled navigate filling out the forms and dealings with assessments. You say in your post that you don't have any disabilities or illnesses, so I'm not sure how helpful our advice might be.
You really do need to seek the advice of a specialist welfare advisor, who can look at your entire circumstances and tell you which benefits you should be applying for. That is not something we do here. I realise that it may be difficult if you are unable to leave your accommodation because of your precious dog. I have included a link to see if you can find help in your area. advicelocal.uk/.
You can contact the ~Universal Credit helpline - General help
0800 328 5644
Hours: Mon – Fri 08:00–18:00
Be aware that if you are not accustomed to phoning benefit phonelines, you may find that it takes you up to an hour and a half to get through. It is common for people to get cut off. Many people say it is best to try as soon as the lines open.
You can also get general information about Universal Credit from the government website www.gov.uk/universal-credit/contact-universal-credit
I don't know what it means to live on a boat, but it seems you should be able to claim universal credit. You do need some sort of address (which I noted you said you didn't have), but the answer I got suggests different options for overcoming this - but the options depend on individual circumstances.

You can just walk into your local Jobcentre and request that you collect your post from them. They will keep it for you and release it at your convenience. If you experience any difficulties here is the official DWP guidance:-
You do not need a fixed address to claim Universal Credit
You can claim Universal Credit if you have no permanent address, you’re sleeping rough, sofa surfing or staying in a hostel.
If you do not have a fixed address
If you have no permanent address, you could use the following as your ‘care of’ address when you apply:
the hostel you’re staying in, or last stayed at
a friend or family member you trust
a day centre
your local jobcentre
