Pip review was created by lshepherd1
I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm in the middle going through a PIP review and I currently get the standard daily living and standing ability components. On my last assessment it stated that because I use a walking stick and grab rails outside of my house it says I have adequate grip. I suffer with chronic pain syndrome and osteoarthritis in my lower spine and I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome a year ago. I was just wondering if I could use a stick to mobilise but need to stop to rest, and also due to pain caused by carpal tunnel syndrome and chronic pain syndrome if I state I need supervision with cooking because I I regularly drop things due to being unable to grip pots and pans etc would i be contradicting myself . How do I address this when completing the moving around section 12?. Advice will be welcome. Thanks

Hi ishepherd1

The issue with grip in terms of cooking will be discussed in the first question. You certainly should be highlighting that you drop things and have difficulty with grip. That means you have safety issues. Just because an assessor previously said you have grip - that doesn't mean you have - they were just giving their opinion.

You will not be contradicting yourself. Question 14 i(moving About) s about walking outside and is quite different and may require different grip strength from what you need in the kitchen. If you have to stop and rest - say so.

Have a look at page 17 of the guide to PIP claims and Reviews. about 'reliability' This will definitely apply to you when it cones to moving safely and reliably. benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/pip

• Safely – in a fashion that is unlikely to cause harm to themselves or to another person. (See the
‘Safety and supervision’ section immediately below for more on this).
• To a necessary and acceptable standard – given the nature of the activity.
• Repeatedly – as often as is reasonably required.
• In a reasonable time period no more than twice as long as a person without a physical or mental
health condition would take to carry out the activity.

This is just a snippet, make sure that you read it all and apply it to your situation.
