Refusal low rate mobility DLA - autistic child was created by SNmum
My autistic son's claim for DLA for mobility was declined.
On grounds of low rate mobility it was refused as the decision maker referred to "online medical guidance" that supposedly states that a child would not be expected to find their way in unfamiliar surroundings or develop road sense until the age of 12.
I would be grateful if someone could please tell me what this document is and where to find it as I cannot find this statement anywhere in any document available online. I want to be able to properly refute this argument that has been made. It seems that there is some sort of expectation that all children under the age of 12 wouldn't be able to find their way around in places they do not know well.
Thank you.

Hi SNmum
I'm sorry this has happened. I'm surprised at that - just think of all the kids that make their own way to school. I did when I was 5 and as well as walking down a country path, I caught a train and walked 1and a half miles the other end to school. It was quite normal, and my eight-year-old brother wouldn't go with me and went alone!
It may be in this guide www.gov.uk/government/publications/medic...ld-cases-staff-guide (It's 950 pages - so I haven't looked)

Thank you for your reply. Its nowhere to be found in this document. I have scoured the entire document.
It really is a strange thing to have been said by the decision maker as it directly contradicts the actual test for low rate mobility in the first place. I would just love to know where on earth this statement has come from.
