Moving Home Transitional Protection Question

Hi Guys,

I am looking at moving home from one local authority to another, this is so I can be closer to my support network.

I am currently on UC with transitional protection intact.

What I would like to know is how, if at all, my UC/transitional protection will be affected if I move?

I have heard of 3 different scenarios:

1. That if the new rent is over what I pay now then I will have to find the extra myself.

2. That if the rent is less than I am paying now then I will loose the equivalent amount.

3. That if I move I will loose all of the transitional protection money.

So yes I am somewhat confused and would like to know what the correct answer is.

I would really like to move to be closer to my support network but I can't make the move if I would be seriously worse off financially.

Thanks in advance.

Hi KeithW

Just moving to another Local Authority will not cause the loss of Transitional Protection.
If your Housing Costs entitlement reduces due to a lower rent then your UC will remain the same. However if your Housing Costs entitlement increases owing to a higher eligible rent then that increase is deducted from your Transitional Element.

Hope this helps.

HI David,

Many thanks for your reply, it is very much appreciated.

That is what I thought but there is so much miss-information out there I just needed to check.

Thanks once again.

Best,

Keith
