Inheritance, UC and NS ESA was created by Brian1888
I am likely to be receiving an inheritance in the coming weeks and will take me over £16,000..I receive UC (LCWRA) incl housing costs and NS ESA.
I'm aware that UC will stop.

I have a few questions please -:

1. Can I inform DWP at any point in an assessment period of inheritance?

2. I have some credit card debt, rent arrears (due to UC migration) and some other financial debt which I assume I am allowed to pay off ?

3. I currently have a small car over 13 years old which I would like to change. I would be buying used car of same size. Am I allowed to do this ? Would DWP consider it as deprivation of capital ?

4. When UC stops and savings then go below £16,000 would I have to go through the whole UC journey again, provide fit notes, WCA assessment etc?
Or because I also receive NS ESA (Support) would UC still assess me as LCWRA.

Any other advice would be very grateful.

Paying of debt and buying small car would likely take me just below £16, 000 savings approx.

Many Thanks in Advance

Hi Brian1888

To answer your questions:-

1. Can I inform DWP at any point in an assessment period of inheritance?
Yes, with UC it is the bank balance at the end of the Assessment Period that is used.

2. I have some credit card debt, rent arrears (due to UC migration) and some other financial debt which I assume I am allowed to pay off ?
Yes, you are always allowed to pay off debts.

3. I currently have a small car over 13 years old which I would like to change. I would be buying used car of same size. Am I allowed to do this ? Would DWP consider it as deprivation of capital ?
You should be ok with the same sort of car.

4. When UC stops and savings then go below £16,000 would I have to go through the whole UC journey again, provide fit notes, WCA assessment etc?
Or because I also receive NS ESA (Support) would UC still assess me as LCWRA.
As long as you are in receipt of NS ESA in the Support Group then your health status will transfer to your new UC claim.

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks David for info and quick reply.

So, can I pay off debt, buy car etc at beginning of assessment period and inform DWP say a week or 2 later as long as its within same period?

Thanks

Hi Brian1888

That would be a possibility. Though it would need careful planning.
