Pip phone assessment report is odd was created by Hellmices
Hi..
I have a few auto immune disorders and a few neuro conditions including a stroke.
I have a job but applied for pip in the summer due to having to change job role.

I had a serco phone assessment last month. Not recorded cos I messed it up on my phone. No decisions on my claim yet but DWP have informed me they have all info needed.

I have no words for the assessment report apart from odd. Assessor was rude, hostile and kept talking over me. She told me I had fully recovered from the stroke. She has not noted any of the info I put in my claim. I gave the same answers anyway. She has contradicted herself in the report and clearly tried to twist what I said but oddly she has cherry picked bits from my hospital neurology letters and clearly has no knowledge of neuro issues.

i have normal visual fields. My balance and other problems are due to the stroke not a vision issue. She has stated see neurology letter normal visual field for justification on descriptors to give me no points.

For cooking she has stated see neurology letter, safe to drive. The neuro letter actually says no driving implications. The reason the letter says that is because I do not have a licence and do not drive anyway.

Another odd thing is she kept asking if I had lost any significant amount of weight recently and yes, that was also used in the report but she refused to let me speak and wasn't interested in listening to me or knowing what size I am. Is it normal to expect someone who's size 6 trousers were hanging off them to lose weight? (Yes, size six!)

The report also refers to me as they. I am not trans or non binary and did not state any pronouns.

I sm expecting no points and to have to go for a MR but am I right in thinking the report is odd for want of a better word or is this a usual thing?
Thanks

Hi Hellmices

Welcome to the forum.

You might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum.

The assessors report can at times seem strange which is why we ask claimants to get a copy after their assessment. Quite often assessors take short cuts and copy and paste when they write up the report and do not proof read, what they have written. I have even seen reports with other claimants names on or using wrong pronouns. As you mentioned in your post about safe to drive when you do not have a driving licence.

In the report have a look at what the assessor has marked in their opinion, if it is all "A" then you will probably not be awarded PIP, so your next stage will be to apply for a mandatory reconsideration.

Now you have the assessors report, you will have a better understanding of how the DWP Decision Maker has come to their conclusions and you will now be able to argue against them.

I usually use a highlighter to highlight any inaccuracies, once you have gone through the report you then set out why you are applying for a MR and go through each descriptor one at a time why you disagree with the assessor and try and match it with any supporting documents you may have sent in.

Understand that the assessor is offering an opinion when they say 'in my opinion' you can do the PIP activities, tackling these head-on is unlikely to be successful, you need to show that the basis of that opinion is founded on incorrect information, so try and refer to your evidence to undermine what they have said, remember they are just an opinion which is not based on fact.

Also, try and stick to issues that lead to your scoring points, I often hear members referring to the assessors spelling, as an example, whilst it may show a lack of professionalism, raising it as an issue isn't going to help you get an award.

Your primary task is to show that you meet the criteria, there are many reasons you may have failed, you need to address each of these but don't get bogged down in criticising the assessment report unless you can clearly show that it is incorrect, it is a lot easier to argue the facts of the situation.

Lastly, make sure that you understand the criteria that you are being assessed against you can put the best case forward that is possible but you won't score points if you do not meet the PIP Descriptors.
