''My sales for the year were £189, and my purchases £281.''
Interesting, that I got it wrong. Our brains can be real tricksters. I think the terminology used confused me, for 'purchases' are more commonly referred to as 'cost', in self-employment. 'Purchases' is a more general term. If I were asked 'how much has your purchase (purchases?) been for this year?' in relation to my self-employment, I would probably go 'uh?'.
