Walking and distance was created by juststu
If someone can walk 50 to 200 yards before stopping to recover from breathlessness and/or pain, but can continue to walk to about a mile with frequent stops. Does pip take into consideration the distance covered before having to stop, or the overall distance covered with stops and starts

Hi Juststu
The questions on the PIP AR1 form are:-
78. How far can you walk on a regular and repeated basis.
79. Do you need to pause or stop when walking. How long for?
Can you walk a mile on a regular and repeated basis? Does the pain and breathlessness vary from day to day? Are there some days when you couldn't walk at all ?Do you need to use a stick or other aid.
Question 82 is " Please tell us why and when these needs began" So you could explain further there.

Basically it's about my wife. She visited hospital couple of weeks back, and the consultant asked her how far she can walk with her atherosclerosis and emphysema. She said that she has to stop every 100-150 yards, but usually goes for a daily walk of around 800 yards or more daily in order to keep moving, but with frequent stops. The doctor wrote on the hospital letter "Can walk up to 800+ yards daily with frequent stops". She already has been awarded 4 points for the PIP question moving around (walking 50 - 200yards before needing to stop)
Now she's worried that if PIP ever see the letter (It is a hospital/doctor letter) that they will question how far she can walk, and probably misunderstand the distance that she walks before having to stop.
She won't stop worrying. What are the chances of a hospital letter going to PIP without her knowing? What can I tell her to stop her worrying?

Hi juststu, please don't 'confess' to walking any distance that causes you significant pain. This is because walking in significant pain, even if you CAN do it, does not meet the 'to an acceptable standard' part of the four factors to say you can do an activity and should not score points for it. Also don't forget to apply the 'as often as required' standard.

Hi juststu
Walking distance is not an absolute maximum until you are exhausted. There are 4 criteria that all need to be met, and apply to the PIP walking assessment
.
The criteria (Regulation 4(2A)) apply to all of the descriptors across Daily Living and Mobility.
• safely
• acceptable standard
• reasonable time
• repeatedly
Safely- Is there a risk of substantial harm due to falls, lack of balance and dizziness.?
Acceptable standard is basically doing the activity in a reasonable manner. Any walking done with significant pain must be disregarded. So you may walk 400m but after 200m you are in pain. So for PIP purposes you can only walk upto 200. Fatigue and breathlessness also count as not being 'acceptable '.
Reasonable time - A walk that takes longer than twice the time an able bodied person would take doesn't count for PIP.
Repetition applies to what walking you would like to do or would attempt to do if you didn't have your disability.
So what is the distance of walk you could do before you are in pain and breathless and could do several times per day as circumstances dictate?
