URGENT told need telephone call with work coach to complete New style ESA claim was created by jp247
Hi all,
Please can anyone help me with an URGENT question?
My partner has put in a claim for New Style ESA on 5 April 2026 online , with a fit note from his doctor backdated to 20 Jan 2026 stating he is unfit for work due to.fatigue, ( he has completed Stage 1 of being assessed for chronic fatigue and is awaiting an appointment date with the chronic fatigue clinic) headache ( this should state migraines which are a constant)
He has received a message form Job Centre Plus today 22 April 2026 stating he needs to have a telephone call with a work coach on 24 April 2026 the in order to complete his claim.
My questions are:
Is this normal procedure for him to have to undergo a work coach conversation as part of completing his claim, as I can't find anything about it in the Benefit & Work ESA guides ?
Can he defer this appointment ?
Should he be given more than two days notice by the Job Centre for this call?
Can somebody please point me to where on the b&w webiste I can find out what this telephone call may cover, in terms of questions and how long it may last?
Many thanks for your help, it's much appreciated as always

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi jp247
This is not my area of expertise, but I'm answering it because your partner has been given two days' notice. Normally, they should give 7 days' notice for an appointment - but sometimes they give short times because they want to get the process sorted. I can only speak from experience of being with one person recently who had a phone call from a work coach, and it was over in less than ten minutes. They simply confirmed they were sick and unable to work. Because these phone appointments are personal to the individual, I have no idea what else you might be asked. Hopefully, a member may see your post and be able to tell of their experience. It isn't an assessment, so our guides don't cover this type of interview.

Hi jp247
i've been posting about my experience with Ns ESA . I am an apptee for clmt on UC LWCRA. So circs may not match yours.
I had the same query ...... @David (mod) answered here
However , i found this UC FAQ page had useful info on clmt commitment call - i understand its not dissimilar to ESA commitment call.
I've had one call - see my lengthy post
have another on 28 april not sure why tbh
