I think my husband can claim carers allowance:-
He has a private pension which I understand does not effect the claim, he does some part time, averaged over the year he would be well below the weekly threshold, but there may be a week when he earns more than the threshold. quite often they will pay him two weeks in one go.
Could you tell me if it is an average over the year or on the weeks he has learnt more than the threshold would he need to declare it? also If he has had to declare it, to then reinstate the carers allowance would he have to start the application again?

If your net earnings often vary because you don’t have fixed work hours or you don’t work every week, your earnings can be averaged.
This means that the decision maker deciding whether you qualify for Carer’s Allowance will look for a regular pattern in your earnings over a period of time, or a ‘cycle’.
Example
For example, Henry always works three weeks on and one week off. In the three weeks Henry actually works, he has net earnings of £150 a week. In the fourth week, he receives a retainer of £20.
The decision maker decides that the earnings should be averaged over a period of four weeks as there is a regular four-week cycle.
The £150 net earnings per week for the three weeks Henry works and the £20 retainer are added together and divided by four to give an average of £117.50 net earnings per week.

Unfortunately his work is not a regular shift pattern. He just works when they need him.
I can't find anywhere which explains the process if you do go over the threshold.

If you think you have gone over the threshold it is best to inform the DWP to be on the safe side.
