Has anyone ever challenged the savings limit? (not changed in 20 years)

Now I know most of us never have the luxury to worry about having too much savings, but from what I can tell, the £6000 and £16k limits have not changed in around 20 years, how can that be right when we all know due to inflation those sums are worth about half what they were in 2006 (If that judging by a weekly food shop and gas bill) so why has it not been factored in?' has anyone challenged it? If not, I would assume it is simply because so few people are in such positions that the pressure is not there.

I suffered a spinal cord injury a few years ago, and that has destroyed my mobility as I can not drive. I figured I would save up for driving lessons, a car (I was told this was better than the motobility scheme, but that is another debate) and a mobility scooter, which is quite a lot of money, so I had to forgo all non-essentials for years, and I had to save for furnishing a house from top to bottom which we had to wait 5 years for (the flat we rented before my accident was impossible due to stairs etc)

So I myself went over that £6k (TBH I only knew about the £16k limit) and ended up with a compliance interview/officer and having to submit 3 years of statements (I was £1.5k over the 6k limit, so they started taking some off our UC, ok fine, my bad, I will be back at zero soon anyway) I thought this was the end of it but a year later a different compiance officer has sent me letters asking for even older statements, more info etc.
I know it is to stop scammers, but surely if someone is just trying to be sensible and can prove it, they are just going for low-hanging fruit, and it feels like harassment, when there are literally roads in my city that are lined with motobility vehicles, so most people on that road are disabled? yeah sure. (Mind you, so do PIP reviews when they have all my medical proof)
I feel like I have been stupid by being sensible (which is a first for me, as I never saved a penny in my life, but being paralysed gives you a different perspective).

Who would be good to bring this up with? (The savings amounts and targeting of myself) Any ideas?

cheers for reading

Hi Greeny1210

It is unfair that the savings threshold has not been increased in decades whilst other thresholds have more than doubled. Here is further information:-

The HMRC income tax personal allowance has increased by approximately 150% over the last 20 years.

Here is a breakdown of the standard personal allowance for the 2006-07 and 2026-27 tax years:

Tax Year Personal Allowance
2006-07 £5,035
2025-26 £12,570
