TOPIC: E.S.A Retraining for work

E.S.A Retraining for work 8 years 9 months ago #28276

  • Bad Back Bill
Post surgery July 2009 I made good progress attended E.S.A work related interviews and was provided with a training place for sedentary type of employment. This was apparently the only one in my area, it involved a 200yrd walk to the nearest bus stop a one hour bus journey and a three quarter of a mile walk from the nearest bus stop to the training facility( training facility would cover bus fares but not taxis).
Coped OK ( using one crutch as an aid) for a couple of weeks then had a relapse so waiting for another spinal op.
The next op. if successful will aim to try and improve mobility ( no cure for back ) and possibly I will be able to walk short distances without pain (fair trade off for losing D.L.A mobility).
I have already been informed by my consultant even if the next op. is successful I will have to limit walking to no more than one mile daily( for life)in order to avoid further back related mobility problems.
So that brings me to the point how can one retrain if you cannot access the b----y training facility.

Hi,

I don't know if they would pay, but 'Access to Work' may help, or try the DEA at your local Job Centre who maybe able to help find a solution.

Thinking more broadly is there a 'dial a ride' type operation, or a 'taxi card' offering reduced taxi fares?. Perhaps someone else at the same training place maybe able to give you a lift either from home or from your second bus stop - try putting a request on a noticeboard at the venue to see if anyone else does pass the bus stop or your home.

Thanks Pete,
The D.E.A showed no interest (only asked if I was in receipt of D.L.A) which at the time I was not.Now that I am combined with the meds I am not in much of a state to do very much.
There's no dial a ride or taxi card reduced fares in the area and the only person on the placement starting at the same time was on the bus with me.Other people on the course were long term unemployed and few had transport those who did were unwilling to go out of their way to provide a taxi service (understandable it should not have been their responsibility). The handful of paid employees started earlier hence would or could not leave the workplace to collect anyone.
After the next op.( when able to try again ) I will contact Access to work that's an avenue I have not explored and possibly if still in receipt of D.L.A or because I had been in receipt of D.L.A
the D.E.A may show more interest.

Regards

Bill
