Do I have to keep supplying JobCentrePlus with medical certificates from my GP, or are JobCentrePlus able to accept a letter from a consultant or GP saying that the condition is ongoing? Thank you.

I am reasonably certain that a doctor can write a Fit Note with an indefinate timescale providing that you have already been determined an unfit for work for at least six months.

You need to send medical certificates (fit notes) from your GP while on ESA assessment rate pending a decision or appeal. If you have an ongoing condition a GP can choose to give you a certificate that's valid for several months.

Sorry I should clarify a bit more: 2 consultants and a specialist NHS physiotherapist ARE supportive and happy to write letters of support, but JobCentrePlus now specifies (over phone) that I must produce medical certificates from GP, even though one of the first letters I received from JobCentreplus said that a medical certificate from GP - or when people couldn;t get one, a letter from a hospital might be acceptable.

The following is a extract from the Decision Makers Guide.

Doctor’s statements
42095 A doctor’s statement is a statement given in writing by a doctor. They are made on an approved form.

A Fit Note is an approved form, I don't know whether there are others.

On the basis of this definition a freeform letter would be excluded.

Is there a problem with your GP issuing Fit Notes?
