Thanks for everyones thoughts. Due to other issues, my wife has just changed GP's. Her new one won't help because she's "never done one before" and clearly has no clue how the benefit system works. We are seeing the senior GP next work. We'll keep the consultant idea in reserve.
Its ironic really. I work for DWP and my wife is a former CAB advice worker who used to fill in DLA application forms for other people. We thought we understood the system but we don't!

It's also a question of what a GP's contract includes.

The standard NHS GP contract includes filling in DWP forms, but not providing reports for patients to include with applications. Therefore, a GP would be free to either decline to provide a report or to charge a private fee for it.

Also remember that If you don't think that your new GP knows your case well enough you can ask for a letter from your old GP to act as evidence. I was told by CAB that they will accept that.

The saga continues. The Senior GP does not do DLA assessment because of hassle and time factors and because "it doesn't make any difference." Worse, he claimed that his colleagues at other local surgeries felt the same way so on the face of it, we look stuffed. We have ordered a photocopy of my wife's medical records, more in hope than expectation. I've also checked with our private medical insurers but they won't touch it.
I'm written to both my local MP and the local PCT to highlight this issue and ask for solutions. Oh and enquired of our local private hospital.
I am wondering whether I should abandon this claim and start a new one. Is there any restriction on how soon that can be made, does anyone know?

Hi concerned, can you not make a list of all of your wife's mobility and care problems/needs. Then take that to your Gp and explain them to him/her, and ask them to write you a 'private report' (for which you maybe charged £30 -35) highlighting your wife's difficulties?
Basically only about 5 mins is allowed for each patient at the Gp practice, so a full assessment would be very inpractical :(
Good luck with the claim, and do not discount the evidence from the hospital consultant etc.

Hi Concerned, Is or Has your wife received any hospital treatment or out-patient consultations regarding her condition/s. The hospital will usually allow copies of those appointments,if she is under the care of a specialist they should be approached phone their secretary and explain everything they are usually very helpful. Best Wishes
