I visited my local CAB the other day and they asked for my NI number---any idea why?

However, I wouldn't have thought that's an unusual request, especially if they are making phone calls or writing letters on your behalf. If so they usually ask you to sign a form of authority as well.
If in any doubt, ask to speak to the manager of the CAB.
