ok, so say you at some stage are without ESA of any description, unable to get employment, having to live off your own monies...................can you during that period then make your own voluntary NI Cont's, in a similar way to those who are self employed?

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

I expect one of the other mod's will be along with a difinitive answer. However, as I understand it you can pay extra contributions towards your pension but they would not entitle you to claim any (other)contributary benefits.

NI Contributions can only be accumulated through paid employment (Class 1) or registered self-employment (Class 2).ok, so say you at some stage are without ESA of any description, unable to get employment, having to live off your own monies...................can you during that period then make your own voluntary NI Cont's, in a similar way to those who are self employed?

I am currently trying to decide whether and how to appeal for the support group, I have been transferred to contributions based ESA and put in WRAG. I have a lifelong chronic illness and one of the things I was worried about was dropping out of the system altogether because if I were to suffer a flare up of my condition I could qualify for the Support group at any time in the future. I thought if you passed the ESA assessment and if you continued to pass those assessments even though you get no money after 365 days you could still get NI credits paid. Have I got this wrong?
