IB/ESA xfer (Transitional Protection after SPA?) was created by DA0
Following my successful IB to ESA Support Group migration:
My non-urgent concern now (assuming nothing changes (with my health, ESA category, or Government legislation)) is as follows:
I understand that IB (if it hadn't been superceded by ESA) would have been paid to me for 5 years after reaching State Pension Age (SPA) (September 2017) i.e. up until September 2022.
What can I expect, if anything, in this regard from the Transitional Protection (TP)? I know little about it (other than covered in the FAQ's), but believe TP applies until April 2020.
I see 3 possible outcomes for my ESA payments:
• They stop at SPA (September 2017) – no TP
• or continue until April 2020 – some TP
• or run until September 2022 – full TP

I hope it won’t be too tricky to answer this, but I suspect the relevant legislation (I see in other posts that Gordon has wrestled with parts of it), even if you could find it, isn’t something you’d want to read, unless you’re an insomniac.
Obviously there's no rush for an answer. I'm assuming normal rules will apply i.e. that I'll get the least amount of money, so no TP, but it'd be nice to be surprised.
Does anyone know if TP covers this issue and if so, just what will it provide and for how long.
Many thanks

As far as I am aware the Transitional Protection does not change the way in which ESA operates when a claimant reaches their State Pension Age.
I believe it is possible to defer your SPA, and this may allow the continued payment of ESA, this being the case, the Transitional Protection would still continue.
Transitional Protection ends on 5 April 2020.

Hi Gordon,
Thanks anyway. I thought it was a forlorn hope.
One more saving from the replacement of IB.
I can see what you were thinking about deferment, but that’s deferring the taking of the State pension money, not of your age. They’ll stop ESA on the day you hit your State Pension Age, whether you take the state pension money at that point or not.
Many thanks again for your input.
Keep up the excellent work.
