Returning to work questions

If I remember correctly IB made provision for people to be able to try work and if they failed at work they could take up the benefit again without having to make a reclaim.
Does ESA provide this same protection?
Secondly I understand that if you have a change of circumstances such as trying work it is in your best interest to inform the powers that be as soon as possible. Some time ago I tried work for three days before ending up in hospital and so I ended up informing the DWP that I had tried and failed and consequently had to repay some benefit.
But what is the longest time you are allowed before you inform them of trying to start work.

The first thing you might want to think about is Permitted Work, you continue to receive ESA and depending on the version of PW you opt for, you can work upto 16 hours, see
Permitted Work
If you want to do more hours or work outside of Permitted Work, then you will need to close your ESA first.
There is a 12 week Linking Rule under which you can reclaim ESA.
You also might want to contact JC+ as there ay be grants available to help you into work.

Apparently for cllaiming RTW credit you have to inform them you started work within 5 weeks of doing so. Which is why I ask what is the longest time you can take to inform the DWP to stop your IB or ESA claim?

I can only refer you to the ESA Regulations 2008.
40.—(1) Subject to the following paragraphs, a claimant is to be treated as not entitled to an employment and support allowance in any week in which that claimant does work.
Starting work is a Change of Circumstances and must immediately be notified to the DWP.
