Hello all

I was wondering how do i go about getting a copy of my medical records, How do you go about getting them and also is separate to the notes they have on you regarding mental health teams.

Will the records show how i became involved with mental health services

Any advice would be grateful

Thanks

Hi gazzmg,

You might find these FAQs helpful

Requesting your medical records

Charging for medical records

How helpful this is depends entirely on the quality of the GP's record keeping. In my experience some keep full and comprehensive records, others are rather more sketchy.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Under Data Protection Laws you are allowed copies of your medical records but you have to pay for them generally. My previous GP just charged per copy and freely provided all, my most recent GP of last 3 years insists upon a £10 viewing fee and then I have to pay 38p per copy of what I want copied, however, due to the fact I made complaint years ago with a view to taking NHS for Medical Negligence that caused my disabilities my records go through a legal process before I am aloud to see them now i.e. they check first for any 3rd party liabilities or even their own liabilities before can even look and it takes weeks if not months for my records to get from a hospital to my GP's!
There is no legal reason they can refuse to give you this information - it is legally yours to have but they will no doubt not supply their own letters from the surgery to consultants and other referrals. If all else fails you can write to the hospitals and pay them for records you need - again legally they have to provide them to you.
Good luck and mean that sincerely if your situation is like mine embroiled in any medical negligence - I have to fight tooth and nail to prove my disabilities and pain to DWP because nobody in the NHS will give a clear diagnosis because with no diagnosis within 3 years of the incident (or even now 5 years on) a solicitor is unlikely to pursue the case for you!
