I think it depends on how likely the Work Programme provider thinks you are to be placed in long term employment, I am sorry If that seems cynical, but that is how they make their money.
First of all, while you remain in the WRAG you are not required work or even to seek work so you should not feel pressured in to doing so unless you are ready and there may me alternative or intermediate steps such as volunteering and Permitted Work that might suit you better.
Once you are on the WP then you participation becomes mandatory and you can be sanctioned for failing to meet your commitments, whilst these are appealable and any action plan should take into account any limitations that you might have as a result of your condition(s), these sanctions can substantially reduce your benefit payments and take months to resolve.
The following FAQ has more details of the Work Programme and links to further information.

Hi gm,
It depends whether it is considered that you can go on to obtain employment for 6 months or more, as this dictates whether the WPP will get paid.
In plain language it depends whether there is any "Bounty" on your head.
They use the terminology "Parking" and "Creaming".
If there is no money to be made from you, they "Park" you. If they think that they can get you into employment for 6 months or more they will push you forward, ("Creaming")
