Hi J,
In your Son's situation, I assume that he would not be entitled to payment of SSP.
Therefore, he needs to obtain a MED 3 "Fit Note" from his G.P. which he needs to send into The DWP, he then needs to fill in an ESA 1 Claim Form. (Keep copies of both)
Sending Documents to the DWP or ATOS
He should then enter the 13 week assessment phase of ESA and should be entitled to the Assessment Rate, which is currently £71-70 for an single, over 25.
Sometime within the 13 weeks assessment phase, he should receive an ESA50 questionnaire to fiill in.
You can access an ESA 1 Form from this page :
www.gov.uk/employment-support-allowance
There is also a guide to ESA, under the heading of :
"Understanding Employment and Support Allowance
Our 42 page introductory guide to ESA."

Agency workers do have certain rights see Agency workers: your rights
In my opinion, from reading the guide, your son should qualify for Statutory Sick Pay
