Hello Gordon and Bro

Thank you, yes I had seen the DWP site regarding COPD. Last year he had 5 exacerbations in 6 months which meant I was up and about day and night helping him to the loo and back to bed. He had to be coerced to eat and drink as well. He has not had an exacerbation now for two months although this year he has had 3 since the beginning of the year. I try to keep on the lighter side of life with the "Old puffer". In answer to Gordon, I should have pursued this last year whilst at his worst, but I did not have the time. I suppose its only since getting the OP along to the Doctor that it has sunk in. I think he has been a 5 for quite sometime.

Thanks again, can I update when I ring the DWP?

I agree COPD on it's own is a devastating disease of the respiratory system. I have brittle asthma which is not COPD, but also have a lung disease called bronchiectasis, which is is COPD despite being a long life non smoker not to mention MS and chronic osteoarthritis.

If he suffers from any other diseases in addition to COPD, then his overall care and/or mobility will be much worse than if he only had COPD.

PLEASE READ THE SPOTLIGHTS AREA OF THE FORUM REGULARLY, OTHERWISE YOU MAY MISS OUT ON IMPORTANT INFORMATION. Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hello Gordon, Bro and Jim

I am sorry to read of your problems Jim, its very difficult for anyone to understand unless they have gasped for breath themselves. I havent myself, however my husband does all the time.

I telephoned DLA today and they asked if I wanted a new form. I told them I didnt think it warranted a new form however there has been a COC's. The lady said that she would pass on the details to an assessor and they may wish to send a new form. I take it that it would not be a PIP but a DLA? The lady did ask a couple of questions ie How far can he walk? Does he have help at night now? The other thing she did was note down all his new medication. We will now wait and see the outcome. I also telephoned IB, who told me that they did not want to know until he was assessed by a Company called ATOS.

It will be interesting to see what DLA do as he is on the mid rate care already.

Hi E2,

"I also telephoned IB, who told me that they did not want to know until he was assessed by a Company called ATOS."

Yes, all current IB, IS and SDA recipients, unless they reach State Pension Age before April 6th 2014, will be transferred over to ESA by Spring 2014.

In anticipation of this, you may wish to read through our :

IB, IS, SDA, Migration to ESA FAQ’s

There is also a guide entitled : "Being transferred from incapacity benefit to employment and support allowance.

A 22 page guide to the transfer process."

At the top of this page :

ESA Claims Guides

At least you will then have some idea what to expect.
