The average is probably around four months but can be as long as 6-7 months in some case.

A friends has been waiting about three months. Would a phone call to ATOS tell her whether they had her ESA50 or whether it had been sent to the DWP?

Yes, if it has been sent to the DWP then the likely result is a WRAG or Support Group placement.
