Food Banks making JSA/ESA irrelevant?

Could the reported rise in food bank use throw a spanner in the WFI Job placement works?
It seems that the Govt left hand doesnt know what the right hand is doing.
A single person probably spends about £50-£60 a week just on supermarket type food,
(ie not eating out at fancy restaurants!)
Co incidentally this is just about the same amount give or take a tenner or so of weekly JSA.
and certainly a major component of ESA.
Effectively this means that a heavy Food Bank user is no longer dependent on Benefit for their food survival.
Do you think the rise of Food Banks will make Benefits redundant and irrelevant?
This could lead to the complete decimation of Local Offices Staff and Job programmes.
They too could soon be "down the food bank"!

James

I have allowed your post on this occasion but as it is a discussion topic I cannot allow further posting.

However, to answer your question, the DWP have previously stated that there is no link between the increased usage of Food Banks and the restriction, reduction and sanctioning of benefits, it is apparently purely co-incidence and much more likely to be related to the increase in the number of Food Banks operating.

I do not believe that it is pure coincidence, but of course the DWP would claim that.

Esther McVey former Minister for Disabled People gave Parliament false/inaccurate information on PIP over 20 times in the short time she was in post. Misinformation from the DWP has been rife with this coalition government.

For more on food banks, see The Guardian news story.

Also, there is a new post today on this topic in News Charity calls for official inquiry as food bank use triples in a year
