Around their sixteenth birthday, children who receive Disability Living Allowance (DLA) are invited to move to Personal Independence Payment (PIP).  For many claimants, this is a worrying time as the rules for the two benefits are very different.  Some PIP activities are particularly tricky for young people, who might not yet have needed to cook, budget or travel independently.

To help ease this transition, we are planning a new Benefits and Work guide to help members who are supporting a child to make the move from DLA to PIP and we need your help!  Your experiences (positive and negative) of this process will help us shape our guide and address common questions about the move.

Please do share your thoughts and experiences using our survey.  The survey is completely anonymous, we don't collect any of your personal details, but we may publish some of the results and some of your comments.

You can access the survey here:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DXH9PSM

Please consider sharing the link if you are a member of a group, forum or site where users might have experiences that would help.

We haven’t been through the process yet but my son receives middle rate DLA for type 1 diabetes but I understand that people with this condition alone are not entitled to PIP. I don’t understand this as the condition doesn’t change.

I want to sincerely apologise to all at the Benefits and Works Team for what I said as I am a disabled individual who is quite stressed and worried about reports from other sources that pepole like myself might be impacted possibly by any possible welfare cuts and this is leaving me stressed, exhausted and  I am really mentally at a low point. Sincerest Apologies to all at the Benefits and Work Team as I worry not just for myself but for all disabled people. Please accept my sincerest apologies to everyone and the Benefits and Works Team.

Best we can do with the prospect of any changes is get our paperwork in order and our medical evidence sorted then consult advisory bodies if we need help understanding the law. When there's a concrete proposal regarding government changes we need to register our opposition by lobbying our mps. Stay calm, hold firm.

I was told about the Tony Blair Institute article and I wouldn't worry about it at this moment. In my experience usually there's a shopping list of "reforms" in regards of welfare, all of the list is harsh and when political reality hits that shopping list gets watered down. They know this and that's why they do it.

Tony Blair himself tried to push through blunt cuts and reforms to welfare and had to water them down to get them to pass despite having a massive majority. The Tony Blair Institute are influential to Labour policy but usually as mentioned before the list is harsh the end result is watered down.

Try to ignore the noise, we know there will be PIP reform, we know Labour are reforming Universal Credit. Sites like this which gets into the meat of any reforms are what I would recommend to get information about.
