Most people use the Benefits and Work site to help with claims or appeals for themselves or someone they are a carer for.

But, in the last newsletter, we published feedback from members explaining how they have used the knowledge gained from our guides and training to help a number of other people:

“Over the years, I helped 4 other people apply for PIP or a higher rate of PIP. Everyone was successful and I am grateful for the guide which I used to help my friends.

“I have been a member for many years as it has helped with my daughter’s claim. I helped my friend do her identical twins . . .”

“. . . using your excellent website and your guides I have been successful in helping 5 individuals achieve the enhanced rates of PIP after making fresh claims and on appeal.”

It set us to wondering how many members use their increased understanding to help other people.

Helping others with their benefits is a brave but brilliant thing to do and it can make a dramatic and permanent difference to someone’s entire life.

We would obviously advise people to always get professional support if they possibly can, when dealing with issues such as overpayments or better-off calculations.

But often the help that people need is with much more basic issues, such as what t write in a PIP2 form, how to prepare for an assessment or the steps involved in lodging an appeal.

These are things that many of our members have become very knowledgeable about through managing their own claims using the Benefits and Work resources.

Sometimes the help needed may be as simple as making someone aware that they might be eligible for PIP and showing them how to find out more.

In other cases it might involve many hours helping someone prepare for an appeal and giving them the courage to persevere.

    Within the last 6 months I have helped 2 seperate individuals. The 1st one I only started to help at Mandatory Request, we ended up at a tribunal and they were awarded enhanced rates for both awards and received a 5 figure back pay because of delays. The 2nd one I helped them complete the forms and after a telephone assessment they were awarded enhanced on both awards and this only took 16 weeks from start to finish.

    I had PIP (old system) and was awarded the lower amount in both categories. I used your guides which were a great help. Unfortunately I then lost the award when it was due to be reviewed / reassessed. The face to face assessment was awful and the assessor definitely wasn't truthful, I lost the claim by 2 points. I did go to a tribunal but lost that. The whole process demoralised me, didn't want to go through it again so I didn't  reapply.  However I knew the new ADP was about to start a pilot in my area in Dundee Scotland.
    So I looked out your fantastic guides and sat down. I found the new Scottish process much better. They actually gave better idea and descriptors of evidence etc. I learnt from my previous experience to actually describe the worst days/tasks and how it impacted on me. There was no face to face interviews. I had collected evidence of appointments, meds, physio etc and very importantly I submitted a witness/personal testimonial from my partner on how my condition affected my life and hers.
    Long story short, I was awarded high rate for both components.  The award is for eight years and will only have a light review. The award has changed my life for the better and has allowed me to apply for a be given a blue badge, plus one bus travel card, ambulant plus pa football season ticket, reduced entry cinema card etc. Without doubt the guides provided by this site are invaluable. The Scottish ADP still has its flaws but is so much better than the old PIP system and most importantly it treats you as a human being.  I did the process online without too much difficulty and the Scottish staff at Social Security Scotland were helpful, pleasant and did not judge me. I would advise anyone not to be put off by bureaucracy, get the forms, use the guides and claim what is there to help you live your life.

    I use the guide and get higher rate PIP for both. When my father went downhill with dementia, I was able to use the guide to assist with an application for Attendance Allowance, a volunteer from a dementia charity had suggested applying for AA. When I had completed the application form I sent a copy to the charity volunteer to see if I had missed anything. She stated that it was the best application that she had ever seen and asked if with identifying details removed, she could keep a copy to assist others.

    Dad got his AA first time.

    I've helped friends with the knowledge I've gained by buying your book,it's been a life saver for many people,as you said people can't get the help they require and some leave things to the very last minute requiring immediate help..there are so many closed doors ,not being able to communicate with anyone,being put on hold,no appointments.unless we help each other no one would get the help,.

    I have helped a friend. Her asthma had caused lung problems and she kept getting hospitalised. She recently received her PIP award.

    I have and still use my time with Benefits and Work to help people. I am encouraging others to become members too.

    Ever since I had a challenged PIP because home assessment deliberately falsified the interview we had.  Subsequently I went from enhanced on both Mobility & daily living down to standard on both.  

    This also meant I had no choice but to return my motability car.  The monetary impact was actually about the same since I used all my mobility towards motabily CAR. 

    Ended up in THE most horrific, sometimes soul destroying & very stressful appeal.  In fact the appeals department at one point LOST my appeal papers!!  

    So I sent them my copy because I KNEW the DWP would delay getting copies to appeals department to hopefully make me give up!  

    I also had FIRST panel in Ashford which was an absolutely disaster - I cried & broke down in the hearing after the judge said he was adjourning my case to obtain further medical records.  This had been 18 MONTHS waiting the decision just to be OVER by then.  

    I cannot THANK the Ashford tribunal judge enough.  He requested last FOUR years medical records instead of the 2 year limit the DWP allows.  Also the fact that a tribunal panel had literally JUST opened in my home town so I didn’t have to go through such a  traumatic experience again. 

    Beginning of Dec I had my final tribunal..   just under 2 years fighting & was informed at the time that was THE longest time anyone had waited for a tribunal.  10 minutes after it started.. a gentleman rushed into the hearing stating he was representing DWP SPECIFICALLY for my case.  

    I got sent out while they talked & 5 minutes later was not only awarded enhanced pip on BOTH again but the DWP rep ADMITTED I SHOULD NEVER have lost enhanced in the first place!! 

     He conceded that I was absolutely correct with my entire application review & my medical records absolutely backed me up 100%!!  

    Plus I strenuously defended myself against the so called assessor because she BLATANTLY LIED. 

    I would NEVER have known you can request full report regarding your own PIP assessment whether it took place at home, or somewhere else.  I WOULD NOT known the DWP HAS to send you a copy FREE OF CHARGE. This information is absolutely VITAL to appealing.  

    I would NOT have known my GP has to supply my medical records (printed) FREE OF CHARGE ti cover what dates you need in support of appeal ot review!  

    Because of you guys?  At my review last year… I sent my medical records along with PIP review/renewal forms. 

    Was utterly DREADING the results.  Would I lose it all again?  NOPE!!  

    DWP didn’t even WANT TO SEE OR INTERVIEW ME!!  They immediately awarded me enhanced Mobility & Daily Living for next 4 YEARS!!  

    THAT goes to show anyone that with correct, up to date, plus extensive guidance for every illness/disability you can think of & how to word the questions!!  Without you guys I would be lost

    .  Subsequently I have helped at least 3-4 other people appeal their decision if already applied, or teach them how to answer questions in a specific way.  

    This is THE ONLY most comprehensive, supportive & VERY reasonable annual membership program that I recommend to EVERYONE.

    I came across B&W by accident several years ago. I have used the guides to help my son receive PIP and a friends to get child DLA and enhanced AA

    I helped a friend, diagnosed with terminal cancer, with her PIP application from the knowledge I’d gained, she got the top rate in both components and it improved her quality of life during her last months. She was like a different person after she got the financial support. DWP should spend more time focusing on the good it can do rather than deny people a lifeline of independence when people are at their most vulnerable.

    For several years my Consultant has asked me to help his patients by providing non-medical advice about my condition Both the main epilepsy charities trained me as a volunteer and I've held various other roles that involve my directing people to accurate information 
    I frequently recommend you as a trustworthy source of information and keep myself updated for their sake and my own

    Yes, I've not actually sat down and filled in the form for anyone, but passed on many many useful bits of B&W info to more people than I can remember, especially simply the existence of B&W, the quality and reliability of the info and just how cheap it is to join. I've had a lot of grateful responses, I don't take the credit, it's all B&W's. Wonderful work, team!
