Melton Mowbray citizens advice bureaux is to close with only two weeks’ notice, making all 10 staff redundant.

The shock news comes in spite of the fact that the bureau’s core funding from local councils, which makes up 70% of their income, has not been affected.

According to the chair of trustees:

“The bureau is financially unviable due to a complex range of factors.

“Funding from Melton Council and Leicestershire County Council has not been cut. However, the bureau has been facing financial pressures because other funding has come to an end and, despite its best efforts, in the current climate it has been difficult to find replacement funding.”

There are hopes that a new service will be opened at some time in the new year. In the meantime, with Cardiff CAB having shut in similar circumstances last month, many observers will be wondering which agency will be the next to close its doors.
