    My whole post

BBC 1, Dr Who, season 2, episode 7, Wish World, 24 May 2025:

    The disabled community:

"We don't just sit around complaining. We have a plan. We're going to bring down... "

    They say "God"

    I was thinking more "Government".

The Sun is reporting that Kemi Badenoch has apparently made it clear that the Tories intend to vote against the cuts as well because they "don't go far enough" but you know it's actually because they just want to see Starmer squirm.

I don't want to commit to the old saying of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" when it comes to the Tories but I still can't help but feel somewhat satisfied that the Tories being petty as always will be what may down these proposals.

I also just want to see Kendall's smug smile be wiped off her face, even if we're stuck with her for the long term. I don't feel I'm asking for much.

      @SLB
I forgot about the surprisingly large number of MPs who became independents when they had their party whip removed or chose to leave their party. I wondered who the fourth Gaza MP is and apparently it's Ayoub Khan, who is indeed a former Lib Dem but chose to stand as an independent when the Lib Dems told him to keep quiet about Gaza (that's what he says, whether it's true or not I have no idea).

The four Gaza MPs tend to sit next to Corbyn in the Commons and have apparently worked quite closely with him, so although we don't know for certain how they would vote it's a pretty fair bet they will vote against the cuts (which is certainly what Corbyn will do).

I think I'm right in saying that seven of the eight former Labour MPs are those who were suspended when they voted for the SNP motion concerning the two child cap some months ago. They will certainly vote against. The eighth is Rosie Duffield. I would be surprised if she didn't do the same.

@Kat Rehman @Kat Rehman, I can't work out all scenarios because things depend on total means tested benefits received by a household. I just understand the principle that there's no point giving one means tested benefit when it would just reduce another and government has not factored that into restoring uc child element for more than two children.

@Frances I wondered at this, surely if they scrap the 2 child cap and you get benefits for 10 kids you'd still be capped under the overall cap?

@Yorkie Bard If there are 650 MPs, you basically have to reduce that by the number of abstentions, which was why I took off Sinn Fein.  With the speak and three deputies, that brings us down to 639.  If 50 Labour MPs abstained, that would bring it down to 589.  Then, to win, we need more than half of THAT number to actually vote against.   So abstentions do help to a certain degree because, if nothing else, they are not voting FOR, and they bring down the number of votes actually needed.

      I think!

"That one MP saying they 'don't commit regicide' when it comes to ousting Starmer. No, you don't. You just poison the well if your leader is too progressive for you and force them to resign."

......while simultaneously claiming to be the pragmatic "adults in the room" and accusing the progressive wing of the party of being the ones who are guilty of fixating on ideological purity and an unwillingness to compromise.

"Also, considering they're anonymous: smart money says it's one of the key people who helped get rid of Corbyn in the first place."

Yes, I'd say that's pretty much nailed on. With the Labour right, every accusation is a confession.

"that impact assessment in the autumn could make all the difference."

I'm sure that's why they want the vote to happen in June - because if the vote is delayed until after the impact assessment then defeat becomes even more likely. That doesn't necessarily mean that if the vote happens in June they think they're certain to win, it just means they think they have a better chance of winning if they hold it then rather than in the autumn - which doesn't rule out a significant chance of defeat even in a June vote, especially with the Tories now confirming they will vote against, and the number of Labour MPs opposed said to be well into three figures. With the figures which appear to be ranged against them it's hard to see how they could be certain of winning a vote now.

"government figures planning for the bill to pass all its Commons stages before the summer recess"

The best laid plans of mice and men.....

"there is a scenario in which....welfare is done and actually it doesn’t look too bad going into the summer"

There is a scenario in which I have the night of my life with Mila Kunis and Kim Kardashian, but that doesn't mean it's likely to happen. Oh, and I like this bit:

“Things are still pretty early on in parliament, and the solace people have is that living standards are trending in the right direction.”

Unless you're sick or disabled, in which case we're going to grind your living standard into the dirt.

Media get paid to write things if lots of people stopped giving them attention and unsubscribed it would make a difference and as for some of these headlines its churnalism if enough MPs vote against the cuts it won't pass the media need to stop saying that it will .

They want to take the power GP's have of giving fit notes away also.

They do not want you to have a penny if you can't work, it's that simple and apparently doing that will help Labour beat Reform, it's absolute lunacy, Labour are a one term government and I never want to see them anywhere near government ever again after this.

Oh Labour have an answer if we can't work, it's called euthanasia.

Cardiff protest on 3rd June going ahead despite the cowardly DWP cancelling the consultation. See DPAC site for details. Organisers have chosen a central location which is actually suitable and accessible for disabled people - something the DWP could not, or did not want to do.

To the average onlooker Labour seem to be afraid of losing a fight with people in wheelchairs or with other serious health conditions. Just like they were afraid of turning up to the listening session for MPs organised by Carers Uk. I think the testimonies of carers that I heard in that session would have knocked them down or made them cringe with shame. Actually, no, i'm getting carried away - you need a conscience for that. These no shows just prove that their claim to be leading a 'moral' crusade is just an extra shot of Kool Aid for the general public.

Spineless cowards, none of their arguments stand up or can be justified in any shape or form.  We know it and they know it.  They have zero interest in consultation and are not listening even when they do have one of their shamsultations.

The whole green paper and all their plans have to be completely scrapped, along with scrapping them as a government.

No hope really is there if Timms treats those having seizures badly, I have them and have known all along that this so called pathway to work was nothing but a joke, I am not surprised by his reaction, it seems compassion is severely lacking in the Labour camp.  Oh well will have to await our fate, my seizures are frequent but vary in type, I also have to deal with incontinence, I lost daily living at my last review, I just hope to keep my mobilty, I also hope to retain lcwra for a year as I am cb based only but won't hold my breath I made the mistake of setting aside some savings how dumb was I.

Yesterday, l saw a new consultant for my bone muscle disease. I didn't see a consultant for years, but I have engaged with OT who wrote a very good letter that I handed in to pip ..  My condition has worsened.  I don't think it's a good idea to involve my new consultant.  It was a disaster..Straight away l don't like her . I have  a physical disability too ,meaning I don't look like the average bear ..This causes incredible anxiety..Heart pounding and sometimes panic attacks..  The appointment was very strange.  I won't go into detail.. Will my old OT letter still be counted as evidence.  I can also get a support letter from my GP

@Not your average bear If it's recent, it should be, although they might ask your new consultant for comments, too.  It's horrible when you don't like a consultant.  When I was first diagnosed with PsA, I had a consultant who was absolutely awful.  I started cancelling appointments because I couldn't bear to go, so in the end my GP arranged for a change of consultant.  I knew I could ask for one myself, but it's a very uncomfortable thing to do.
