Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

45 mins and counting to change my address or try to this will be the 4th time now. Esa 0800 number. How do they expect ppl with mental health issues or any issues to deal with this, its truly shocking.

Have waited 45mins to get through to ESA 0800 169 0310  only for my call to be cut off !
I am trying to get through on behalf of my partner as he is unable to use a telephone and his speech is not good due to his progressive MS. I have redialled and am now waiting again, but am not hopeful. This has shocked me that this service is so bad. I'd heard stories about how bad it is and am now experiencing it myself.

Pip are so slow I have waited almost 4 months to be told it as now gone to dwp and could take another 8 weeks. I am 6st 1 lb. If I wait any longer I'll probably not be a live to know the answer.  When you call the enquiry line you can be waiting over 1 hour.  If your depressed like me this can emotional get you down. So many errors are made . I've never been updated.  I have been fighting for pip for 3 years now.

My girlfriend has started working full time again and has tried calling dwp to report she no longer needs ESA but so far has spent a total of 8 hours on the line with the usual recored message. Working 8 till 5 she cannot go into a JCplus what can she do? Can it be done via a letter. Or online. Nothing obvious. System is broken. Guess all the staff are working from home ( cutting the lawn or baking)!

Been on the phone DLA to enquire about my sons DLA form so far I’ve been on hold for 56 minutes and still no answer it’s ridiculous I tried 3 times last week and to hang my call up after 45 minutes I think they do this on purpose to lose calls it’s really frustrating especially as you have to keep hearing some really annoying women saying we’re  sorry all our customer services agents are really busy at the moment it makes your blood boil

I have been calling ESA helpline now from 8.30 until 9.00 and the call connected but there was somebody at the other end laughing and no no one spoke to me, although I could hear staff in the background having a right old laugh.  I am furious as I have been holding on for 30 mins and having to work at the same time, its diabolical.  I am now on hold again since 9.00am and still waiting.  People cannot simply call this line with any changes due to the length of time wasted holding on.  I have also to start calling PIP afer this call, when they finally answer.  I would not keep holding, but the fact is that my son who is disabled has had his benefits stopped for no reason whatsoever or no notice.

I have been struggling to get through to ESA for several weeks with shortest waiting time being 45 minutes.  I can't  even get through to the job centre in Chester to talk to them or give them our landline number, as when they ring to do an on line assessment on the mobile, it cuts of with a notice saying 'out of service area'.
My husband is only mobile with elbow crutches and cannot get to the office in Chester as there is no parking and he is at high risk of falls.  The stress this is causing us is dreadful and he has had no money since April 2023.
Isn't it about time something was done about this? Surely an emailing system would be better than this?

Been on the line to pip for 1 hr 50 mins . Drab music and different voices apologising saying more info online.. I didn’t think so and online it said phone up it will be quicker. How much does this cause your anxiety to go up waiting and waiting . It is Friday afternoon. My husband rang the same number from his mobile and it says the offices are now closed at 5pm . I am still on hole and it is 6:15 pm on a Friday . When I looked online it says lines open until 6 pm. I cannot believe I’m still waiting and it’s now 2 hrs I’ve been on hold ;(

On call waiting for almost 3 hours this afternoon.  Three separate calls due to not having an option for my own PIP enquiry. I was forced to hi-jak another enquiry line to get some extremely reluctant & rude assistance.  After over an hour of the most depressing music , a person in dire need could ever listen to . I did at least speak to a human , who did not appear to be someone rudely woken from a Friday afternoon nap on their own sun terrace in Juan . This voice was accompanied by productive & professional office sounds , who within 15 mins managed to assist me with a reconsideration letter.

Have tried to get through to ESA for over a week now. I cannot phone during work times and they seem to close while I'm still waiting to speak to someone. I'll be the one penalised fir not doing it sooner which is the biggest joke.

Tried a number of times re ESA in last few months. Shortest wait time was 40 minutes longest 1hr 45. Today I thought I’d wait until 4.30, maybe I’ll get through, nope, same old message over and over again. Got to 5pm expecting the out of hours message, nope, just on the same loop. 5.02pm, I disconnected the call and re dialled, got the out of hours message.

When I have managed to speak to someone they have always been courteous and helpful.

I am being made to reapply for PIP in June 2023, even though my award has been extended to May 2024, told that if I don't reapply by June 20th, my PIP will stop.  I tried to ring them just to ask why.  Went through all the "press 1 for that" etc & inputting all my personal details only to be told, "Please hang up now."  That happened twice.  I got through the 3rd time & have been on hold now for an hour.  Appalling.
