Is there a distance issue if someone wants to claim carer's allowance.. I know you have to be with someone for 35 hours during the week, but if they live 10 ...20....30.. miles away ,would that be an issue..?..

Hi mt,

As long as the carer is eligible under the qualifying criteria :

www.gov.uk/carers-allowance/eligibility

I do seem to remember something in the distant past regarding traveling time to and from the persons's house receiving the care, and whether this should be counted as part of the requisite minimum 35 hours.

As long as it was clear that a least 35 hours/week of care were being given, there should not be a problem.

I have heard of CA being awarded to someone who travels some 200 miles to the person for whom they care. They stay over for 3-4 days and then return home.

My brother is my registered carer and claims the carer's allowance. He lives 25 miles away he comes 3/4 times a week normally staying overnight, so in effect he is here most days. He is also my nominated driver for my Motability car. We went through all the checks I even had to have a DLA re-assement although I had indefinite award. If you need the help and that person is giving 35+ hours per week you are fully entitled to claim it.

This is going to sound stupid, but, if I am claiming carer's allowance for someone, is it possible for someone else to claim carer's allowance for me..???
Told you it was stupid but it is something which has been going around and around inside my head for months... With that and the voices it's getting noisy and full up in there....xx

As long as you receiving DLA MRC or HRC or have a PIP Care award then someone can claim CA for you. Any issue will be with your claiming CA in respect to your Care and Mobility needs, but I am guessing that you have already gone past this stage if you are already receiving it.
