My son who is 17 has fought a rare blood condition for 16 years that led to Diabetes when he was 4 he still has the original complaint but it is kept in check with strong meds we have had over 1200 hospital appointments as a in and outpatient and are currently seeing a immunologist who says that his case is one of the most complex he has ever seen at the moment we are also in transition from a childrens Hospital to a adult Hospital we have at the moment higher rate care and lower rate mobility the PIP form has arrived and we noticed with the help of your guide that people like my son get less points now for medication and its application ,we are up so many nights when he has a low sugar count administering Glucogel etc is there anyway we can work this in to his pip form thank you for any advice .

Hi pw and welcome to the forum. It appears that you have already found our guides but this link should help explain how things work.

Welcome to Benefits and Work

DLA gave high rate care component to claimants who need care both day and night. PIP does not take this into account at all, points are scored for the specific descriptors and nothing else. As you say, there is only one point available for needing help with medication. I'm sure this can't be the only thing that you son needs aids or assistance for though?

Just to add to the advice already given.

The PIP activities must be completed reliably and on the majority of days to not score points, you can score 8 points for Managing Treatments if you can show that it takes more than an average of 14 hours per week to provide support and that he cannot do this himself.

Hi pw,

Yes, it can be "hard work" obtaining and compiling all the evidence, can't it !! :(

After sending off all our forms we have since had some bad news about our sons condition ,his immune system is so low its at a level that it cannot fight off infections it means that he has started a strong anti biotic treatment and is going to have to have a course of immunoglobuins weekly administered at home at first by a nurse then after we have been trained my wife or I will have to administer the infusion ,would it be wise to send this new information straight in or wait until the nurse comes this week so we know how long the infusions will take thank you for any advice
