Hi Tony
Sorry to hear of your illness. My partner suffers with COPD (although not stage 4).
I am in the process of completing ESA review for him & I completed PIP Application for him in 2016 at which time I requested evidence from his GP that he struggles to walk more than 20 steps without becoming breathless. (The measurement yardsticks for walking are crucial). This disability in inter-relatable to other daily tasks which can cause breathlessness, like cooking a meal, dressing, etc. ( If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.

Hi Tony.
By only getting 7 points for care, you were 1 point short to qualify for the standard component (as you probably know), You need at least 8 points to be eligible to apply for carer's allowance.
You get the standard rate if you score between eight and 11 points for your daily living needs in the PIP test. You get the enhanced rate if you score 12 points or more. If you check the guides relating to the points that can be scored for each activity, then you can make sure that when the review is due next you can provide paper evidence from your GP &/or Specialist on how you can struggle with daily tasks. You were obviously very close if you scored 7. Did you score anything for needing help to prepare meals ? You could get at least 2 points for this.
My partner has been on ESA since 2009. He is in the Support Group. The process has been relatively straightforward for him, although we do not know how it is going to pan out for this current review he is undergoing as things seem a lot more complicated these days.
Basically, as you probably know, you need 15 points from the questionnaire/assessment to qualify. The 'Moving around and taking steps' question carries 15 points if it can be proved that you cannot move around more than 50 metres without difficulty. You would need to say here that you are restricted to less than that - being 20 metres & give evidence from your GP for this. You may also need to consider the 'Exceptional Circumstances' clause for yourself if you are Stage 4 COPD. See below:-
. "suffering from some specific disease or bodily or mental disablement and consequently there would be a substantial risk to the mental or physical health of any person if you were found not to have a limited capability for work-related activity."
The Member's guides provided by this Benefits & Work Site would be invaluable to you when completing an ESA Application.. Good Luck.

Hi JJ.You mention that your husband copd did he get pip and ESA support group does he get this solely for this or has he got other ailments. I am currently off on the sick from work been signed off for one month and I am considering getting another sick note. I am 57 yrs old and have really struggled to stay in work. I struggle with everything. Constant fatigue, out off breath, depressed panic attacks and I have coughing fits and black out. My thinking is that I might keep getting sick notes for 26 wks. and try and get more pip and go on ESA if I can be put in support group.

I have COPD, I'm 63 and just had my yearly medical at breathing space, not sure of what stage to be honest but have a cuboard full of inhalers. I receive ESA support group, not had a face to face in the last 7 years, and although I was receiving Dla mobility at the high rate and care at the low rate. Just been transferred to pip enhanced for both with no reassement for 10 years.
