Will the DWP want to contact my Lessor? was created by George222
I am a lessee on a long lease and I am being migrated to UC from ESA and I am concerned that the DWP will want to contact my lessor under the new regime. My lessor is a nightmare to deal with and for various reasons I owe him money. Can I pay him housing costs directly and avoid any contact between them? What can I expect?

Hi George222

Claimants decide whether they want the DWP to pay their landlords rent or whether they prefer to receive the money and pay the landlords themselves. The DWP won't be contacting your landlord.

Hi Bis,

Thank you so much for responding. That's a relief, my lessor landlord is a trouble-making narcissist.

I have another question which you may know the answer to.

Are the ESA Regulations 2008 and the Universal Credit Regulations 2013 equivalent with regard to housing costs?

Many thanks,

George222

Hi George222

Although what BIS stated that the housing element is paid to the claimant is correct, UC will contact the landlord to verify the rent.

UC housing regulations are different from HB regulations, some service charges that were eligible under HB are ineligible under UC regulations, we would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Specialist; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies in your area advicelocal.uk
