ESA Medical Assessment was created by Kevin O'Connor
I Attended An Assessment Today, [removed] I Think It Went Well,But We'll Have To See.
I Have Ankylosing Spondylitis (Arthritis Of The Spine),Emphysema,Sleep Apnea & I'm Undergoing Testing For Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
What Does Puzzle Me,However,Is This.I've Taken The Sample ESA Test On This Site And It Put Me In The Support Group. But I Wasn't Even Asked Some Of The Questions In The Sample.
For Instance,Q1;About How Far You Can Mobilise. I'd Put In My Form I'd Filled In That I Could Only Travel 20 Metres,When The Least Option They Offered You Was 50m,So I Expected To Be Questioned On That,But I Wasn't.
Q2; About Remaining At A Work Station:Wasn't Asked
Q3; About Raising Your Arms Above Your Head; Was Asked & Tested On That.
Q4;About Moving 0.5 Or 1 litre Carton;Wasn't Asked,Wasn't Tested.
Q5;About Picking Up A £1 Coin Or Operating A Keyboard;Wasn't Asked Or Tested
Q6 & Q7;About Making Yourself Understood & Conveying Simple Questions;Wasn't Asked.
Q8;About Navigating Around Familiar & Unfamiliar Surroundings; Was Asked That One.
Q9;About Loss Of Control Of Bowel &/Or Bladder; Was Asked That One
Q10;About Lost Or Altered Consciousness; Wasn't Asked,But Brought It Up Myself. Not Sure If It Registered,Though As She Never Probed About It.
Q11;About Completing Simple Or Moderate Tasks;Wasn't Asked.
Q12;Awareness Of Every Day Hazards;Wasn't Asked.
Q13;Initiating & Completing Personal Tasks;Wasn't Asked.
Q14;About Coping With Change;Wasn't Asked.
Q15;About Getting About; Was Asked That One.
Q16;About Cognitive Impairment Or Mental Disorder;Wasn't Asked Directly About That But, Again,I Raised It During The General Conversation.
Q17;About Being Aggressive With Other People;Wasn't Asked.
Of The Additional Support Group Descriptors; Was Asked And Discussed In Detail About Bowel & Bladder Evacuation.Wasn't Asked About Eating,Chewing Or Swallowing.Wasn't Asked Any Questions About How My Mental Or Physical Problems Could Impact Those Around Me.
I Was However Questioned About Depression & Whether I'd Ever Felt Suicidal. There Was A Long Discussion About How My Physical Illness Impacted On My Day To Day Life.i.e.,How Did I Get Around The House;Getting Up In The Morning;Washing,Shaving & Preparing My Breakfast.Preparing My Meals In General;Housework & How I Kept Myself Occupied During The Day.I Was Also Asked About Stumbling & Falling,About Going Shopping,Did I Have Any Friends & Did I Go Out With Them? Did I Drink Alcohol? We Discussed When I Last Worked,How Long I'd Had The Illness & Which Consultants/Doctors/Physiotherapists I Was Seeing. She Also Did A Blood Test;A Flow Meter Test & Some Simple Stretching & Mobility Tests,Which She Allowed Me To Do Sitting Down.I Was Also Asked How I'd Got There & How Long It Had Taken.Did I Fill The Form In Myself Or Did I Have Help.Be Warned,If You Filled The Form In Yourself(I Didn't) You Arrived By Bus(I didn't;My Son In Law Brought Me In His Car) This Is Taken As Some Sort Of Sign That You Are Fit Enough,Maybe,To Work. Also,When I Arrived The Assessment Was Upstairs.I Was Asked If A Fire Broke Out,And The Lift Wasn't Working,Could I Get Down The Stairs.I Said,No,And So My Assessment Was Taken On The Ground. All But One Of The Other Half A Dozen There Also Had There's On The Ground Floor.A Word To The Wise;If You Say Yes To That Question & Go Upstairs For Your assessment,Again,That Might Be Taken As Some Sort Of Sign That Your More Mobile Than You Claim. My assessment Lasted About 45mins.

KO

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

It sounds like you had a very standard assessment.

They do not ask you directly about what you have included in the ESA50 questionnaire, but rather infer from your answers to questions about your daily activities, how you got to the appointment, etc. what you may be capable of.

The assessor will complete their report and return it to the DWP for a Decision Maker to make Decision on your claim.

When you say Blood test, do you mean blood pressure or are ATOS using needs now?

I would assume so, there is nothing in the ESA Descriptors or Regulations that requires the result of a blood test.

Thank You Gordon.I Rather Think I'm Going To Be Placed In The WRAG Section,Simply Based On What I Read In The Press.I'm Quite Disabled But I See People Who Are Far More Disabled Than Me Being Put Into This Section. If I End Up In This Group,Will I Get Less Money Than I'm Getting Now? At The Moment I Get Income Support With The Incapacity Component. Also,Will It Immediately Affect My DLA? I'm On The Higher Rate For Mobility & The Middle Rate For Care
Thank You
