Changing my payday

I'm still often short of money every other Saturday night/Sunday morning, so I think it's obvious that the solution is to get the DWP to change the date I'm paid. My surname begins with a letter quite early in the alphabet, so I thought that the solution to this would be to change my surname so that it begins with a letter earlier in the alphabet, but I don't know if this would work, because my friend/volunteer next of kin has a surname which begins with a letter of the alphabet later than mine, but he gets paid 4 days before me.

Hi Z,
Your ESA payday has nothing to do with your surname.
It is dictated by the last two numbers/digits of your NI Number, ESA is generally paid fortnightly in arrears. :

I've looked at the table of 2 digit codes you linked to, but my NI No. ends with a letter and there are two digits which come before that, but these two digits don't appear on the table, although I get paid on Mondays. I'm not sure what this means. Obviously, I don't want to post my two digits on here, in case of DWP spies.
Hi Z,
It is the last two numbers/digits of your NI Number before the final letter of the your NI Number.
e.g. If your NI Number was ZZ 11 22 33 C, then the digits in question would be 33.
If you then look at the chart, 33 falls between the range 20 - 39, so the relevant payday for this NI Number would be a Tuesday, as seen in the table below.
"National Insurance Number (Last 2 Digits)
Day of week
00 - 19 Monday
20 - 39 Tuesday
40 - 59 Wednesday
60 - 79 Thursday
80 - 99 Friday"
You cannot change your payday, it is not a matter of choice.

I now plan to ask my bank if there's anything I can do to speed up the payment process, which starts on Thursday or Friday. I may have to pay for this service. [Mod Edit]

Hi Z,
The bank are instructed by The DWP by mandate/BACS, not to release your payment of ESA until your payday, which appears to be a Monday.
The bank will not change this. Your only other option, although I am not advising you to do so, may be to request an overdraft facility from your bank.
There may be a charge for such an overdraft facility.
