Preparing for Tribunal - Interpreter Required? was created by redrobbie
Hi All,
As I'm the representative for my mum at her Tribunal hearing next week I have been reading through the notes and advice (extremely helpful - Thanks!) and it has been mentioned that the clerk should be made aware of any issues prior to the hearing.
I was just wondering as my mother cannot understand or speak English should I mention this? I was planning on interpreting but just wondering whether this would be acceptable?
Thanks.

You definitely need to contact the Clerk of the Court about this, it's possible that the panel will be happy for you to translate on the day, but if not then they will need time to arrange for their own interpreter to be available.

Hi redrobbie,
Ideally you should state on the notice of appeal form (SSCS1; question 3) if your mother needs an interpreter. I'm afraid relying on a friend or relative is not acceptable; tribunals insist on using independent professional interpreters.
You can find the guidance leaflet from the link below.
SSCS1A - How to appeal
Best of luck with the appeal,
Derek

Hi Gordon, Derek,
Yes I did state this in the Section 7 under Q3 that she needs an interpreter.
I will call them tomorrow to double check this has been arranged saving wasting anyone'e time.
Many thanks. Will let you know how we get on!

Dear All,
I just wanted to post a big thank you to everyone who replied and contributed to the forums and guides on the B&W site. I represented my mother at her tribunal yesterday and it only lasted 15mins and wasn't as nerve racking as I thought it would be.
The Video which shows how a tribunal is carried out was unbelievably accurate and helped to calm my nerves so would recommend everyone going to a tribunal to have a watch. My mother received letter from tribunal today that she has had her DWP decision overturned and has been recommended to be placed in the Support Group.
I just wanted to know what should I do next? Also can I now reapply for her PIP and would she need to do another ATOS assessment or would this decision be valid for the PIP too?
THANKS AGAIN!
